Doris Benter is a New York State artist who creates layered and textured artworks that sit between painting, and assemblage. Doris ‘s work is shaped by by her life growing up in a military family. Order, tradition, and quiet tension infuse her figurative works. Costume jewelry, military insignias, societal emblems all are embedded within each piece.
Religious elements-crosses, saints, and sacred relics reflect the spiritual legacy of her father’s second life as an Episcopal priest. These components infuse her work with reverence and personal mythology. By reclaiming and reimagining new uses for forgotten pieces, Doris honors the sacred, and the personal-transforming discarded materials into narratives of memory, identity, and transformation.
